PRINT SPACE LIVES! NYC’s Awesome Rental Darkrooms Still Going Strong
Several alert readers told us that the darkrooms at the Jewish Community Center (JCC) on NYC’s Upper West Side closed in 2009.
That’s a big loss; the JCC darkrooms were rather stupendous. (SEE THEM HERE.)
However, other amazing B&W facilities soldier on.
One of the most important is Print Space. If you’ve never printed there, we urge you to do so, sooner rather than later. (151 West 19th St., 8th floor, NYC; 212-255-1919; darkroom@printspacenyc.com. www.printspacenyc.com)
Where else will you find 68-degree water on demand and perfect ventilation, about 50 complete air changes each hour? And, if you need help, experts are right there to help you make real, genuine B&W prints you’ll be proud to display.
Print Space has taken a few hits lately, as is to be expected. Previously a color floor and a totally separate B&W floor, everything’s crammed onto one floor now. Gone is the cool, mellow and spacious loft-like feel (and the student group B&W darkrooms).
However, Print Space still has four fantastic private B&W rooms and an 8x10” enlarger. Major fine art B&W pros print there constantly.
And despite the fact that Print Space’s bread and butter is now digital C-printing and high-end Imacon scanning, their strong commitment to B&W continues.
But it can’t continue without the support of people who love real B&W. These are tough times for traditional processes.
So if you’ve been meaning to work at Print Space, do so now. All you have to bring are your negatives, paper and your love of real, hands-on B&W printing.
We can pretty much guarantee that you’ll love printing at Print Space.
